The REDS application

The Reciprocal Environmental Decision Support (REDS)

The REDS application, developed as part of the PRO-COAST project case study in Arne, lets you know how much your garden can contribute to carbon sequestration and support sparrow populations.

Want to try the REDS app? Click here to begin!

Using REDS, you can map your garden according to different land uses (lawn, hedges, artificial surface etc.) and record sparrow sightings as well as squirrels, hedgehogs, and blackbirds.

After you map a garden, the app can generate two types of score: one estimates the garden’s carbon sequestration potential, and the other assesses how suitable it is for sparrows.

House Sparrow scores

Use the app's scores to identify which areas of your garden are most inviting to house sparrows. Want to see more of these visitors? Try adjusting your garden layout within the app to find out what changes could make your space even more sparrow-friendly!

The data that you provide allows us to refine the model over time, to better predict garden layouts favourable to sparrows.

Carbon sequestration and human life saved

Gardens can play a significant role in capturing and storing carbon dioxide, which helps mitigate climate change and its adverse effects on both nature and human health.

Excess carbon emissions contribute to climate change, leading to harmful impacts such as extreme heat events, forest fires, and floods. By enhancing carbon storage in our environments, we can help reduce these risks and protect human lives.

Garden plants contribute to carbon storage; however, not all plants are equally effective in this role. Some species are more efficient at sequestering carbon than others.

The REDS app identifies which areas of your garden are most effective at storing carbon and estimates the positive impact this has on human lives.
